Next exhibition

Our new group show will be opening on Thursday the 7th of July, it will feature four extremely talented abstract artists.

‘Chroma’ 7-31 July

Opening event Thursday 7 July  6-9pm
Jenny Beard, Paul Grist, Frances Ross, Gavin Mcintosh.

CHROMA
This exhibition brings together four abstract artists whose practices are centred on a deep engagement with colour.

Colour expresses something in itself (Van Gogh)

Colour has a substance which is difficult to take out. This is the whole point of painting (Per Kirkeby)

Paul Grist
On the surface Paul’s paintings are concerned with aesthetic considerations, with satisfactorily  combining colour, line and geometry to achieve a resolution that is right/balanced or complete.  Beneath that surface Paul is deeply engaged in many of today’s political, societal and educational  issues.
Jenny Beard
Jenny’s work focuses on painterly gestures and marks, and when they become signs. Marks are ambiguous, whereas a sign directs us, informs us. Part of her practice involves pushing paint between gesture and sign - and in the recent Monochrome series - goes one step further to become a ‘model’ of painting, an ode to the viscosity and vibrancy of oil paint.
Gavin McIntosh
Gavin’s practice combines systematic and intuitive processes to produce works that prompt a contemplative engagement. He also uses his painting to reflect on matters of politics and social justice and has recently been invited to contribute to an exhibition at the gallery of the Institute for Palestine Studies in Beiruit.
Frances Ross
Frances aims to produce work where colour acts as an aid to drifting and meditative thoughts. ‘Each viewer has their own associations with a particular colour - it has a memory, a smell, a sound  associated with it and by placing colours together she hopes to stimulate an internal conversation.

Hello friends

Cole’s Gallery is delighted to invite you to the opening of or new group exhibition

‘Rough or Smooth’

curated by Cole’s Gallery, Julia Pomeroy and Eleanor Hawkes

opening event Thursday 16th of June 6-9pm Leeds Corn Exchange

Rough or Smooth challenges the relationship and the boundaries between a base surface and applied medium, while conveying colour, form, and/or depth. With the intention to break away from the comfortable and traditional surfaces of canvas, linen, and paper, typically for painting and drawing, we wish to challenge these artists to apply their practices to a new and unfamiliar surface. Questioning two-dimensional and three-dimensional contemporary art and see what differences arise when these realms are blurred. This group exhibition showcasing artists from across the UK brings together a range of disciplines, use of materials, and individual ideas on representation from their varying practices, within these exhibitions’ parameters.

“A painting or a sculpture really exists somewhere between itself, what it is, and what it is not-you know, the very thing. And how the artist engineers or manages that is the question’.”
-Richard Tuttle

Cole’s Gallery, The Corn Exchange, Leeds
Opening hours Tue-Sat 10:00-17:00   Sun 10:30-16.30
show is running from 14 June- 3 July

Kind regards
Joss
