An introduction to our new watercolour painting courses, painting for all levels: 


2 Day Course: 


Day 1:  June 27 Thursday 6-8:30pm: In Cole’s Gallery. Starting techniques and ideas 


Day 2: June 30 Sunday 1-4pm:
Painting from life around the historic 
Leeds Corn Exchange.


During these 2 day courses, students will be able to have the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills of the following:

•         Exploring and experimenting with watercolour paint, techniques and processes
•         Understanding, tone, composition and colour
•         Drawing / mark-making preparation for paintings
•         Watercolour as a living medium in situ and everyday life 

Watercolour painting has a rich history from Chinese landscape painting, Indian miniatures, Victorian British painted records of, ‘The Grand Tour,’ across Europe, to expressive experimentation in the 20 Century and beyond.


We will be treating Watercolour painting as the opposite to camera phone photos taken like everyone else. 


You will bring back records of scenes, people, places with delicate touches, unique expressive marks of the brush, images felt by you and no other, no need for likes.

We have a great afternoon planned full of Leeds history and art. 


The event is run by Clifford Stead and Joss Cole here at Cole’s Gallery 
We will meet at Cole’s Gallery and be treated to a historical tour by Cliff, focusing on unique architecture, public art, historic retail and transport. 


The plan is to take images, sketches and inspiration from the tour to make some original artworks in the gallery in the afternoon. The art workshop will focus on experimental collage and drawing responding to the tour and gallery surroundings. A great opportunity for beginner artists, the curious and regular hobbyists wanting to try something new.

Cliff Stead -


Clifford has been painting city scapes of Leeds and across the world for the last twenty years
He studied at the Jacob Cramer College of Art. The printing industry became my bread and butter career, working at Pettys in Leeds. Cliff runs tours and events around West Yorkshire, for example, The Leeds Owl Trail’, Sketch Club Social and tours for the Civic Trust 


As an artist Clifford opened  the ‘Clifford Stead Gallery’ in 2000, in Chapel Allerton. His first London Art Show ‘A Tribute to LS Lowry’ on Cork Street opened in 2004 and his first overseas exhibition took place in our American twin city of Louisville, Kentucky in 2007.  With Antonia Stowe Cliff set up the Leeds Owl Trail in 2009. 


Joss Cole – 


Joss runs Cole’s Gallery a small independent local art gallery in Leeds Corn Exchange  that specialises in painting, prints, progressive and traditional art work. Cole’s Gallery runs various open calls and opportunities for artists to exhibit and engage with a gallery and show work for the first time.

Julie is a Wirral based artist whose work is rooted in the Visionary Landscape Tradition, and is particularly inspired by the mystical perspective of William Blake and Samuel Palmer. She holds a BA (First Class Hons) in Art with Theology and Religious Studies and has an MA in Fine Art from Chester University.


‘A Road Less Travelled’ responds to a quiet walking time when evening descends into night. This is when I am most inspired by the effects of changing light on the almost unseen. These shifting momentary perceptions are then translated into pastel paintings when back in my studio. Working intensely and instinctively I manipulate wet and dry materials intuitively until my briefly glimpsed shadow evolves into a fleeting mix of memory and perception
The ambiguous narratives that emerge are open to personal interpretation, inviting the viewer into a liminal place which stands on the threshold between nostalgic association and something unknown.

BLAKE
 An exhibition of art inspired by the work of visionary William Blake * The show gives artists the opportunity to showcase their work at Leeds, CENTRAL SQUARE, Atrium and Concourse from the 5 to 27 October.
We are a group of artists calling for entries for a William Blake-inspired exhibition. 

The show gives artists the opportunity to exhibit their work at a stunning contemporary Leeds Location, Central Square Leeds, 29 Wellington St, Leeds LS1 4DL, just a few minutes from the train station and Leeds City Square.

We are looking for 35 Artists who work in all mediums- 3d sculpture, 2d work, performance, multimedia and new media. 

The online submission process will be open until Friday 1st September 2023, giving artists from across the UK the opportunity to submit their work and take part.

​New Traditions


Richard Kitson (b. 1981 Sheffield) and Luke Thompson (b. 1993 Leeds) are two artists whose work is primarily concerned with, but not exclusive to portraiture. Though both artists work within the same field, their approaches and styles differ and this exhibition brings together their work for the first time.

Jonathan Hooper & Phill Hopkins

Town & Country brings together paintings and drawings by Leeds based artists Jonathan Hooper and Phill Hopkins. In ways entirely distinct but sympathetic to one another, Hooper and Hopkins define their own realities in their thoughtfully considered subjects and rendering.
Both work in the northwest of the city, Hooper paints the residential architecture, whilst Hopkins the immersive nature of the landscape.

Taking Space is taking place at Coles Gallery this October!
Aire Place Studios is going on the road with an exciting assemblage of artist members. Following on from the success of the Members Show at APS Gallery this Spring, Taking Space at Coles Gallery is a celebration of Aire Place Studios Members.
Aire Place Studios is delighted to be taking up residence at Coles Gallery this autumn, seizing the opportunity to highlight the distinct painting talents of six of its accomplished Members.
Providing a platform for artists to exhibit their work, the beautiful light-filled space of Cole’s Gallery is located in the historic Leeds Corn Exchange – the Art Quarter. Championing local artists Cole’s offers a warm and welcoming environment which allows you to comfortably browse local art.


In the Taking Space exhibition expect to see colourful, abstract paintings by artists Sarah Francis, John Gamble, Chloe Morton, Jasmine Estelle, Ashley Ferrari, and Lina Bentley.


All the artists involved in the exhibition are part of the APS Membership which can be bought for just £45 per year. As an APS Associate Member, you will become a part of a growing community of talented artists and creatives working in a wide range of styles and media, all at various stages in their careers’.
