Our new group show will be opening on Thursday the 7th of July, it will feature four extremely talented abstract artists. ‘Chroma’ 7-31 July Opening event Thursday 7 July 6-9pm Jenny Beard, Paul Grist, Frances Ross, Gavin Mcintosh. CHROMA This exhibition brings together four abstract artists whose practices are centred on a deep engagement with colour. Colour expresses something in itself (Van Gogh) Colour has a substance which is difficult to take out. This is the whole point of painting (Per Kirkeby) Paul Grist On the surface Paul’s paintings are concerned with aesthetic considerations, with satisfactorily combining colour, line and geometry to achieve a resolution that is right/balanced or complete. Beneath that surface Paul is deeply engaged in many of today’s political, societal and educational issues. Jenny Beard Jenny’s work focuses on painterly gestures and marks, and when they become signs. Marks are ambiguous, whereas a sign directs us, informs us. Part of her practice involves pushing paint between gesture and sign - and in the recent Monochrome series - goes one step further to become a ‘model’ of painting, an ode to the viscosity and vibrancy of oil paint. Gavin McIntosh Gavin’s practice combines systematic and intuitive processes to produce works that prompt a contemplative engagement. He also uses his painting to reflect on matters of politics and social justice and has recently been invited to contribute to an exhibition at the gallery of the Institute for Palestine Studies in Beiruit. Frances Ross Frances aims to produce work where colour acts as an aid to drifting and meditative thoughts. ‘Each viewer has their own associations with a particular colour - it has a memory, a smell, a sound associated with it and by placing colours together she hopes to stimulate an internal conversation. COLE’S GALLERY is delighted to present an exhibition of Art Works by the, ‘Blend’ Art Collective We are a group of diverse artists who met through a Leeds 2023 co-creation project at Leeds Central Library in 2022. As a collective we believe that our lived experiences of mental wellbeing issues or neurodiversity should not, and will not, define us. We believe creativity is a human right. We understand that opportunities in the creative arts are harder to access if you have additional needs and that we are stronger together. Our co-working approach provides mutual support, skill-sharing, and joint opportunities to develop, nurture and share our professional practice, both as individuals and as a collective. We are Blend. Common among the artists is an engagement with the material and metaphorical world; Sales work through symbolic mean and allegory, Van Leader through emotive and expressive absorption into the paint surface. Traces of linking forms and patterns of landscapes draw the works together and highlight the individual meanings and real strength of their individual practises. The exhibition features multiple works by Andrew Sales and Joshua Van Leader. Opening Event Thursday May 5th 6-9 pm all are welcome After event @pastelleeds The show is running from 5-29 May Joshua Van Leader is an English painter, author and designer. Art has been an instrument of expression for him from a young age. His inspirations and multidisciplinary professions are manifested from the abundance of nature and the adversity that we all go through at some point in our lives. Van Leader says, “I’ve found what I want to do for the rest of my life, my purpose is to paint and to constantly experiment pushing my own boundaries in the studio. Joshua Van Leader studied at The Academy of Art University, San Francisco (Bachelor of Fine Arts) Andrew Sales The subversion of landscape tropes and expectations is at the heart of Andrew's painting practice. He is aiming to use landscape and its preconceived assumptions from art history to wrong foot and surprise his audience. He is preoccupied with using landscape as a vessel to convey both abstract and literal/universal concepts to the viewer. This is an attempt to create a dialogue about a chosen subject matter unique to each painting. The creation of liminal, often neurotic spaces where ideas are displayed through composition, referance and subject matter are at the core of Andrew's work. Sales completed a Masters in Creative Practice, Leeds Arts University. The culmination of a very exciting nine months by Clifford and Yusef to create a new "Leeds Artist Community". The concept is a monthly rotating sketch club, "un-tutored", taking artists to places they wouldn't usually go to. The sessions are three hours long with refreshments. Since last Summer we've covered a diverse range of views from Kirkgate Market Balcony to the 12 storey roof of "Platform" above Leeds City Station. The exhibition at Cole's Gallery is an opportunity for our sketchers to show off some of their talent. The exhibition is in two parts. There is the "Leeds Sketch" section which reflects what we have achieved in our monthly sessions. Then there is "#SKETCH_UKRAINE", we've asked our sketchers to create work that reflects Ukraine to sell for charity towards that country. Hello friends
Our painting and print exhibition by Chris Eastham continues with all works listed available on the website Dance, Joy, Connect ‘The Casanova Studies’ A compilation of the drawings and paintings made whilst visiting Northern Ballet’s studios, along with a catalogue of the work will be on view from 10th March until 10th April 2022. The exhibition is a celebration of dance, both as a source of joy and connection with others - something which was woefully missing during this last two years. It will hopefully mark a return to a time in which normal activity, such as visiting the theatre, and galleries can be enjoyed. Northern Ballet’s Casanova at Leeds Grand Theatre.
