Joshua Van Leader and Andrew salesCOLE’S GALLERY is delighted to present an exhibition of paintings by Andrew Sales and Joshua Van Leader In curating these two diverse painters together we gain an insight into their shared attributes: texture, dense colour and layered meaning. Common among the artists is an engagement with the material and metaphorical world; Sales work through symbolic mean and allegory, Van Leader through emotive and expressive absorption into the paint surface. Traces of linking forms and patterns of landscapes draw the works together and highlight the individual meanings and real strength of their individual practises. The exhibition features multiple works by Andrew Sales and Joshua Van Leader. Opening Event Thursday May 5th 6-9 pm all are welcome After event @pastelleeds The show is running from 5-29 May Joshua Van Leader is an English painter, author and designer. Art has been an instrument of expression for him from a young age. His inspirations and multidisciplinary professions are manifested from the abundance of nature and the adversity that we all go through at some point in our lives. Van Leader says, “I’ve found what I want to do for the rest of my life, my purpose is to paint and to constantly experiment pushing my own boundaries in the studio. Joshua Van Leader studied at The Academy of Art University, San Francisco (Bachelor of Fine Arts) Andrew Sales The subversion of landscape tropes and expectations is at the heart of Andrew's painting practice. He is aiming to use landscape and its preconceived assumptions from art history to wrong foot and surprise his audience. He is preoccupied with using landscape as a vessel to convey both abstract and literal/universal concepts to the viewer. This is an attempt to create a dialogue about a chosen subject matter unique to each painting. The creation of liminal, often neurotic spaces where ideas are displayed through composition, referance and subject matter are at the core of Andrew's work. Sales completed a Masters in Creative Practice, Leeds Arts University. The culmination of a very exciting nine months by Clifford and Yusef to create a new "Leeds Artist Community". The concept is a monthly rotating sketch club, "un-tutored", taking artists to places they wouldn't usually go to. The sessions are three hours long with refreshments. Since last Summer we've covered a diverse range of views from Kirkgate Market Balcony to the 12 storey roof of "Platform" above Leeds City Station. The exhibition at Cole's Gallery is an opportunity for our sketchers to show off some of their talent. The exhibition is in two parts. There is the "Leeds Sketch" section which reflects what we have achieved in our monthly sessions. Then there is "#SKETCH_UKRAINE", we've asked our sketchers to create work that reflects Ukraine to sell for charity towards that country. |
